Whats the best way to judge the profitability of a site?

I've just been doing some year end calculations on a number of my sites.

Basically, I totaled the number of sales and divided it by the numbers of machines and then divided again by the number of times I visited the site in the last 12 months.

For example:
SITE A sold £800 has 3 machines and I visited the site 8 times, this equals £33.33 per machine per visit.
SITE B sold £600 has 1 machine and I visited the site 10 times, this equals £60.00 per machine per visit.

So based on this criteria SITE B is the more profitable.

However, If I measure by site and not by the number of machines then SITE A is giving me £99.99 per visit and more sales overall throughout the year. I also have to visit it on 2 fewer occasions.

So which would be classed as the more profitable site?

Work out an hourly rate and petrol cost to visit site then times by number of visits and deduct for a more realistic figure.

Im with you Ade, even my rubbish sites I retain as I have spare machines, just visit less frequently

It depends on how you approach your business, a mixture of both those sites is very good to have. I am personally heading towards the site A approach as this enables me to work on my other business venture. This way you can afford to pay someone to do your vending round and still earn a salary whilst concentrating on other business interests.

To answer your question, Site A, because it's made more revenue, therefore more profit, site A is also less time consuming to manage. Putting a 2nd or 3rd machine in never doubles or triples sales but the incremental increase is almost always worth having. It may mean more investment in machines but will save time. It is for this reason I never measure sales per machine, per site yes. More relavent isthe overall revenue & profit per month & the hours needed to get it. I don't micro manage my sites with stats but I do like to get a global view of business.
