When I went travelling around in the land of barbies namely Australia, these were everywhere in garages, shops, and parks. With the weather in this country you would have to be crazy to invest.

Self spamming I think. Great idea though if you could get into a supermarket on 50 % commission as obviously no products needed apart from plastic bags

Same fundamental problem as many vending ops, for an investor to become a national distributor it's a one hit profit because there are no repeat income streams such as 'a product' which in this case is water. You could only really see this as viable if the machine was on a rental deal...
For operators of the machine a different story financially. However I know that these machines jam up alot if they don't make regular sales, simple reason is that the ice cubes stick together and can't make it into the delivery chute and / or crusher. We looked at this for Spain a few years back, in the correct climate, yes...
