Self Packing Tubs
I've got a couple of questions regarding self packing tubs for towers.
As far as i can see if i want to pack my own tubs I will need to contact the local council to be approved. Is it straight forward to get this done for home packing or is having a unit the better option? Showing no contaminants will get into the product seems fairly straight forward (gloves, face mask, hair net, clean working area etc) but do councils tend to approve this within a home?
What about labels? I've had a look to see what information needs to be on the products but can anyone point me in the direction of a good supplier of printed labels for self packed tubs? And any indication of how much you pay for labels? Do you put your own branding on the labels or go for a simple label which just has the information required?
Is there anything else i should be considering when packing my own tubs?

Re: Self Packing Tubs
Having done some more research on suppliers i've found some lid labels that work out about 1.8p per label (plain, not printed).
Does having required information on the lid meet the required standards? From what i'm reading it is required to have certain information on the front of a product however the main suppliers seem to have all info on lids, so am i safe in assuming this is fine?

The price sounds excessive!
Does it include VAT?
Otherwise it would be over 2p a label. Crazy.

The price includes VAT and delivery.
Only other ones i can seem to find that are lid shaped with little bits to go over the side to show the product hasn't been tampered with cost 2p per label.
Both prices are when purchasing 1000 labels, so I suppose there is the possibility of getting a lower price if contacting the suppliers and asking for bulk discounts for bigger orders.

Re: Self Packing Tubs
IMHO I would buy from one of the suppliers. When self packing you have a lot to do to get it right and you can’t take chances when dealing with the public - it only takes one complaint and you will get a visit. If you wanted to self pack then start with products that you don’t handle, ie pre-wrapped sweets like Toblerone, fun size stuff etc. Because the products are wrapped by the manufacturer then the heat is off you and any issues are fed back to the manufacturer. By the time you have done all the running around, sourcing products, sourcing cardboard boxes to store your stock, labels, anti-tamper labels etc it really isn’t worth your while. The two suppliers out there both do a great job at making the pot look professional. You are dealing with the public and having self printed labels on products really looks low rent and will affect the buyers decision whether to make a purchase or not.
Kind regards

Hope the above helps, it’s just my opinion and I am sure many do self pack who make a go of it.

Barbara is spot on, Joe public is very savvy, if it does not look right they do not buy it. As suggested purchase from suppliers, it is safer, looks professional and they know what they are doing. Would be lost without the suppliers.

Re: Self Packing Tubs
Thanks for the responses.
I'm definitely going to start with ordering from the main suppliers and may well stick with doing that. I'm just interested in the process, regulation and cost of self packing to see if doing some lines self packed when I am able to find good deals can bring down the average price paid per pot and therefor increase overall profit. I don't plan to take self packing as my main way of getting product into my towers.
Going for pre-packed stuff for self packing is looking like the best route to do this from reading back through this forum and the advice given here.
Thanks again!

Re: Self Packing Tubs
i self pack some lines loose and wrapped, getting passed by council is fine they inspect your home etc and pass you as long as stock is stored correctly, you have ingrediant information to hand and obviously gloves etc, no fear off contamination.
i do my own labels using smartysysoft label maker, ingrediants can be found by googling product and copied and paste onto label. i only do 2 lines for loose, jelly snakes and sugar dummies.

Hi Ade,
Thanks for the response. Do you use lid labels or wrap around labels?
