I use staff to do the site finding part and keep the emptying, in-house as much as possible. I don't let any employee think that they have a route or exclusivity on any area as it keeps them all on their toes. I have one staff that I trust implicitily and the rest know that they are only as good as their last days work.Wages are a huge outlay and nothing should be left to chance. As to when you should employ staff, it's simple. When you are earning enough for yourself and there is enough surplus that you don't mind loosing it to someone else then employ a staff member to do JUST enough work to use up that surplus.

Noel

I employ someone in summer months. They put together my 93 mm toy balls for 5p a ball. They can earn about £10 hr. My reason is that I'm running round like crazy dealing with tourist trade. Coming home at 9pm to put together 1000 balls is a no goer for me.

Re: At what point do you take on staff?
i employed someone part time when i got to 170 sites 3 years ago. I paid them 15% and they used there own car. They covered about 60 sites at that time. The reason i employed someone at that point was to cover for me if i were to fall ill. All you guys with 70 - 200 sites if you were to fall ill what would u do?? Plan Z i called it at the time. It have changed now though as i have more sites. i suppily the van and fuel. The percentage has come down to 10% but with a fully racked out van its easier. They can cover more sites mainly because everything is in the van no more loading every morning forgeting stuff etc
