A couple of tower problems

Post by Tufty »

Hi guys,

I am sure this has been asked a thousand times before but I'm just not sure of the exact terms to enter in the search to find the answers.

I have a couple of towers that a coin goes in fine but when you turn it the coin seems to catch, sometimes it can be forced round and sometimes it will turn back and let you get the money out. Anybody any experience of this and what I can do to fix it? I went to collect from a site and the stock was still almost full and the staff said it has been jammed for a few weeks.doh!

The other issue I am having is with very stiff turning handles,an adult would be OK to turn it but I'm not convinced a child could,is this likely just a case of stripping down and lubricating the machine or is it likely a bigger issue?

Many thanks for any pointers

Hi Laurie,
It all depends on what type of mechanism you are using. PM me a photograph of your mech and I will be able to advise accordingly. Having refurbished 400 mechs recently I am sure of resolving your issue. When I service machines I usually squirt some silicone spray into the mech, you can buy this from Halfords or Marlins (that is my source). Under no circumstances use WD40, it stinks and I am sure taints food! I am an ex-engineer so take it from me, silicon spray is the way ahead.

Thanks Pablo!
I have actually been using some of that and solved a few issues on other towers,I will test it on the hard to turn ones tomorrow but I’m still having this same problem with the catching. The machines causing it are chrome clenports,it is as if something needs filed down and I can’t work out if it is the coin mech or the barrel itself that is catching. I can’t for the life of me work
Out how to get pictures on to the forum or pm but once I do I will get some across to you. I have managed to find a few sites I’m meant to be dropping off these machines to on Monday so I’m hoping I can get them in perfect working order over the weekend to avoid embarrassment

the plate is catching on the pawl, where you put pound coin in, look at mech from rear and the top right of the plate is catching on the the first pawl as you turn mech. take mech off tower and watch it as you turn you will see, turn it slowly.
answer is file edge of the pawl down at an angle slightly so pound coin lifts it and glides smoothly past it

Hi Laurie,

If you have a birthday or other coming up, get someone to buy you a dremel kit. The best purchase and godsend I have ever had, really came to the fore when upgrading the mechanism.

Cheers
Pablo
