I upgraded drums on M42 Pringles quite a few times. If it has the old style of barrel then you need to cut out the plastic barrel holder then rivet in the new metal holder in it's place. Takes about half an hour cutting & filing.

The type I have (M108/M42/M49) all have the metal bracket/housing behind the drum and as the drum itself was jammed (not just the mech) I had to drill out the rivets holding it in place from the top of the body, remove the drum/unjam it then put it back in place and rivet the bracket back in behind it.

A little note to anyone having to do this, remember to replace the drum before you rivet the bracket back in. I initially riveted the bracket back in first then remembered the drum wouldn't go back in with the bracket in place so I had to drill it out again and rivet it back in The whole episode was a right 'barrel' of laughs Not something I want to do again in a hurry.

Next time I get a mech jam I'll definitely try the 'screwdriver down the front' technique though

As I say in this instance the drum itself was jammed so prising the mech out would of made no difference as I had to drill the rivets out holding the drum in place anyway. If a mech gets jammed from a coin or whatever I'll certainly try prising it out with a screwdriver
