1964 Cavalier Coke Machine Intermittient Cooling...

Post by tdipartz »

I recently purchased a 1964 Cavalier CSS-8-64 Machine. It has the CAV-873 Refrigeration unit in it. The previous owner said it was working but needed a 3 in 1 Hard start kit. I transported the machine laying on it's back. Let it sit for 24 hours upright before I did anything else. I installed the RC0410 kit, Blew out the fins of the evaporator and condenser with compressed air to make sure they would get good air flow then plugged it in. It fired right up and was whisper quiet. Both fans working correctly. After about 30 minutes I opened it up and it was NOT cool inside. I unplugged it and let it sit overnight again. The next morning about 12 hours later I plugged it in again and after about 30 minutes it was ICY COLD inside! However the compressor unit was humming / vibrating pretty loud so I unplugged it for about 2 hours. I plugged it in again and after 30 minutes it was still whisper quiet, I thought I was out of the woods. It was operating correctly, both fans spinning but the inside was not cool! I unplugged it again and now I am in a holding pattern, I do not want to damage the machine. One note is was 90 degrees today after I plugged it in the second time. Is it possible I overheated it? Is there a thermal safety on it somewhere?

A picture of the chiller would help. If the. 2 fans were running I would be surprised if over heat in such a short time. Was the condenser starting and stopping when down to temperature?

Compressor was going out BIG TIME. Had the entire refrigeration unit rebuilt locally by the Guru's. (Been there 25 years) Now it is TOO COLD! Goes down to 28 degrees in 30 minutes even on the lowest setting ! I would think the thermostat was tested during the $400.00 ream job. Anyone know how to take a thermostat apart, clean it and calibrate it? Maybe the pump they put in is too high BTU ?

Is the thermostat a bimetallic one or an electric one? sounds like a problem with that or the probe. Too large a pump won't make a difference it will just be more efficient at cooling and slightly higher on your electric bill. would buy a cheap replacement stat/probe and test as pretty sure that's your problem. Is it a 2 wire stat?

Just watched video , bailey that condenser fan is noisy is it that bad or does it sound worse on the video??Sounds like the blades are catching on either the condenser or the radiator. However that won't effect the chilling side of things.
