Public liability

Post by geordielee »

Hi all,I have been looking at Public Liability quotes and can get them for approx £100,
On the simply business website there is Professional Indemnity cover and it says "This protects your business against compensation sought by a client if you have made mistakes, found to have been negligent or if your products have failed to perform their intended function."
Do you guys have this or do you think I need this as it adds another £100 to the policy? Thanks

Hi,the Public liability quote is £104,but in the build your policy section it has a list of extras you can buy, such as stock,tools,business/office equipment, buildings cover and professional indemnity(cover for negligent advice or service) and it is this last one that would add £100 to my policy amount, making the total £200+,and I just wondered if anybody else had this or is everyone just taking out PL insurance.

My renewal was only £77. Not sure if it was because I'm existing customer or because of referals. Anyway it also includes cover for packing your own stock. Use this link http://www.simplybusiness.co.uk/welcome ... TM571803XB" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and maybe it will come up cheaper.

If the standard policy doesn't cover you for negligence, what the hell does it cover you for!?
It's all a bloody con.

Professional indemnity is really only needed if you design or advise, for example I have PI insurance as I am an electrician and will design a lighting circuit for a client. The circuit is wired in the wrong size cable and does not work, the client can then sue me and my PI has to pay out. If I wire it in the wrong size cable and someone gets electrocuted then my public liability pays out.

Unless your designing the machines or sweets then don't worry.

Eatsweets is correct, but as a vending operator public liability covers you for any accidents that may happen which are, or can be, directly attributed to the equipment going wrong. However it does not cover mistakes which you make yourself. If you fail to properly screw the machine to a stand and it falls on a child then that is not covered. THAT is something that will only be covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance. Similarly if a child eat out of date sweets and became sick and it was traced to the sweets then only PI would cover it. Public liability insurance only covers if the equipment fails , not if the operator fails in his duty.

Hi,

Just taking this a level further. If I place a tower on a bar top at the landlords request and a child pulls it off and the child is injured, or killed, will PLI cover me fully. In addition, if I plummed in a coffee machine on site and my work leaked. I think the last one is similar to your electricians scenario.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul if you put it on a bar and a child pulld it down then it's down to you. You failed in your duty to properly secure the machine. Even though the landlord asked you to put it there, it was still your responsibility to secure it and prevent any accidents. Only professional Indemnity insurance will cover this.
If the coffee machine leaked and it was down to a fault on the machine or the pipe then PL insurance would cover it. If it was down to the way you plumbed it , then you would need PI insurance to cover it.
