Replacing the barrell on a tower

Just trying to change over a barrell on a tower and after unscrewing the main centre but an 3 small nuts on the sides to split the machine in half I can't work out what tool I need to unscrew these 2 small screws which seem to be holding the barrell in place, when I look under te machine it looks like they were melted on but from the top it looks like maybe an allen key will do the job but no luck!!

Any ideas?

You need to use a small screwdriver on one of the slots to turn, put some WD40 on and leave for 5 mins first. The threaded tube is welded to the nut at the bottom so dont try to turn that. You can buy an anti vandal screwdriver (recommended by Matt several times previously!!!) but a small screwdriver should do the job

I have already undone those Steve, it's these two which I am unsure how to undo which are troubling me, they seem to be holding the barrell in place

Hi Ross,

They are pop rivets. Firstly, you will need a pop rivet gun and the same size rivets. Screwfix sell a kit will everything you need. You remove the existing rivets with a small drill, just a little bigger than the centre hole. Drill them out and the rivet spins off. Only use a small drill as you do not want to make the rivet holes in the tub any bigger. When you come to re attach the barrel, ensure that both parts are together. Front and back and put both rivets in, before you use the gun to pop them. I would have a go with the rivet gun on two pieces of plastic first, so you get the hang of it. Basically, when the rivet is loaded in the gun and in the slot, you squeeze the trigger until it breaks the shaft of the rivet.

guys ni have removed and changed loads of barrels on towers without drilling those rivets out, turn the barrel angle down slightly and pull it forward, its tight but will come off. you can then slide new one on.

My apologies I thought you meant the other nuts. Have to say I have never changed a barrel but great tip Ade, will store that for future use

Yes ade is spot on here, you just need to change the outer part of the barrel that spins round which often fatiques and breaks along its narrowist part on chinese machines.
Never had a salysol barrel break in this fashion though!
obviously better made and the good news is it is transplantable to a chinese machine.
Like Ade,i have never had to drill out those pop rivets to get the outer part of the barrel off, it is tight but it does come fre with a little jiggling.
