Removed tower

Had a pretty good site ask me to remove my tower today because since it has been installed (3 months) it has apparantly killed all there chocolate bar sales! I told them I would be happy to take it off the charity fundraising and onto a 20% commission but they were having none of it!!!

If this game isn't already hard enough getting sites it seems even harder to stay inside them once you do have them!

Just out of interest, how much do branded chocolate bars cost now days if I were to stock and sell them behind a bar? I bet it's not much more then 20p per unit anyway so the decision is completely irrational! Pisses me off!

Your average bar works out about 40p each (some 35 some 45) so if they are selling for 70p they are making more obviously so cant really blame them. If they buy multi pack they could be paying 20/25p

I lost a fantastic site because parents were buying a sweet pot rather than a £3 desert for the kids. Couldnt argue with them to be fair. Bit of a pisser though when a good site.

I didn't think the margin were that high Steve! In that case I'm suprised it doesn't happen more often! This is why I think charity route is better than commission route as £15 from an empty tower commission is minute compared to the business overheads now days

but Ross with the charity route you are running the risk of someone coming in and offering commission... if you went up against a good salesman/sitefinder you could lose half your round in a couple of weeks. charity is great if the site is low turnover and wouldn't otherwise be worth your while but you would kick yourself if you start to lose good sites as your area is pretty saturated already.

I'm sure they would still be better off with the tower as they would sell more than behind the bar, the tower is more visual and attracts more sales. Especially from moaning kids

Yep I see what your saying but the tower industry is changing and all the suppliers are only site finding on the charity fundraising so you can see how the old days of commission to site are dying!

Also try going into a site with a charity machine and kick them replacing it with yours on a commission basis! Not as easy as you think, trust me

sitefinding only issue you with a lead - once onsite it is upto you to finalise the agreement - I was first chucked out years ago because some kid manager wanted chocklate sales his side of the bar - since then i've more than doubled my business - they shut down soon afterwards - good pubs concerntrate on wet sales & meals -concentrated on chocklate sales barside means the dole queue for the bar management.

Yeah Ross, Pete is right, yet again.
A pub that is doing well is not bothered about selling sweets from behind the Bar, they want to give there food and drink customers prompt bar service and not piddle around waiting for kids to make up there mind which bag of sweets they are having.
Pub has done you a favour, if they are that desperate they need the profit on the sweets, they probably wont be around too much longer!
Have they even thought that sweets and choc behind the bar are prime candidates for pilferage, I doubt it, worth mentioning!

Totally agree, my best site is in a hotel where I have a sweet tower and a pringles, and was also my first site as I know the owner. She decided last year that she was going to do her own sweets and nuts (and pork scratchings...Yuk!) behind the bar instead of the machines. It lasted about three months, when she realised the stock that wasn't eaten by staff went out of date before it was all sold, and for the amount that was sold ended up being completely uneconomical.
