Re: Honesty Boxes
That is part of the problem with them. The boxes that state this mislead customers. I spoke to one of their operators and she had no idea how much as a percentage of each £1 went to the charity. It states 10p on the Childline boxes, but this immediately causes a problem, when you have one of the others sited in the same place.Coin Operated Group wrote:67% of net profits Is more like 1pm

Re: Honesty Boxes
Net profit equals after all costs. So they take fuel, wholesale price etc from the £1. Might leave them with 40p. Thats wages, so zero net profit. "Ooops sorry charity, if we make any money you can have some"

Re: Honesty Boxes
Agree Nigel. I only tried them as I thought they would be easier on my back, but I was wrong. The messing about I have to do to get the pots out of the van and put the boxes in, is a real pain in the ****. Managing the sweets is the next worst- teaming and ladling them from box to box until they finally sell. Theft 3rd and additional fuel and wasted effort for far less profit is last. All adds up to a bad decision on my part, so I wanted to be honest with the ppl on here, so they can make their own minds up.FlintVending wrote:Great post there Style and I agree with everything you say except that in my experience, they do not have to be placed right next to towers to damage tower sales!Style wrote:As I thought. First month everyone is honest and keen to buy sweets. Second month they start paying half price cos thats what they think the goods are worth. Third month they just nick it. Problem is there are so many people operating them and they put them next to our towers. Customers choose FREE sweets from honesty box before paying a pound every time.
Being within the same premises is often enough to hurt tower sales as people who thieve sweets will go to great lengths to get there sweets free rather than pay for them out of your tower.
I know of a guy who used to climb three flights of stairs to pilfer a charity box rather than pay the money to use the big venders on the ground floor reception lobby where he worked!
It is a sad indictment of todays society that some individuals with no moral compass are willing to steal from charity boxes, but that's the way it is!
That's why I am a great believer in the vending machines and feel that adding a box round onto a tower round is not the astute business move some may think it is!
Far better to spend you money on more vending machines vending different products for existing sites if you really want to capitalise on an existing territory.
That said, honesty boxes are a real winner for at least three groups of people!
1. The charity, who get there percentage every time as it is added into the wholesale cost of the sweets!
2. The people who wholesale the bags of sweets. They love theft as it increases there sales!
3. the low life who climbed three flights of stairs!

Nothing against Hurleys. They have invested heavily in this and I hope it works for them over the long-term.

Re: Honesty Boxes
Hi Paul
Thanks for being so candid and sharing with the rest of the forum, that's exactly what this forum should be about, operators helping each other out.
I also think what Hurleys are doing is great and the NSPCC is, in my opinion, the best charity you could possibly hook up with for sweets in boxes.
Full marks to them by being honest about EXACTLY HOW MUCH of each bag goes to NSPCC (10p).
I think it ought to be illegal to print something like 67% of profits go to the good cause on some of these charity boxes.
So that's 67% of what exactly, yep, nobody knows for sure?
Its just a shame that a small minority of the public ruin a business model which would be a winner for operators too in an ideal world.
Sadly, we don't live in an ideal world
Cheers

Re: Honesty Boxes
It could be possible if its a ltd company to do a search then look at turnover /net profits to work out a truer figure, only if the operator is a ltd company that only operates charity bags though i suppose.
