FAKE £1 Coins, to accept or not accept!
If you believe the media reports, as many as 1 in 20 pound coins in general circulation are now FAKE.
They fit into the coin carrier, but a little too snugly.
So when the mech has been turned half way, they don't drop out of the coin carrier into the cash box and jam the mech mid cycle.
The understandably frustrated customer then has no idea why they haven't recieved their sweets and then starts to turn to the segments to make another selection, and we all know what happens when these pots try and run over an open barrel with a pot jammed in it.
Had this twice this week already and pretty ****** off about the unholy mess it creates in the bottom of the machine which involves a complete strip down of the segments to put right.
Has anyone filed out or fitted modified carriers to accept these dud coins, after all, the banks dont seem to give a flying monkies about taking them in??
Cheers Nigel

I get that Nigel. But very rarely. Do you find it more in one type of tower.
I would imgine if you filed the coin carrier to rectify this you would then find smaller coins not going through because of the top tooth that the coin has to push over the carrier.
The new £1 coin is only 18ish months away, we will all have to replace our coin carriers then anyway.

Do you know that is 100% certain? If so, who told you this?

Hi Nigel
The majority of fake £1 coins do vend ok and as we have all experienced, the banks accept them. It is only a crime if you knowingly bank them. As Andy has suggested, filing the coin carrier will help, but with some of the fakes there is not a lot that can be done.
The Realm have not confirmed the exact measurements of the new £1 coin so until they confirm we are none the wiser.
Kind regards,
Barbara

Yes I have filed coin carrier. It works well and doesn't effect the operation of the machine in any way. Coin bags weigh in same.

Does it have the actual dimensions anywhere stated? I have just taken a quick look at the website and all I can see is that they have confirmed the release year of 2017.

Annoying as it is, I get some fakes every now and then but only notice when I count the coins later in the day - I do not count at the premises as if I did that it just attracts attention and besides would probably be annoyed with that particular site. As it stands I just accept as an occupational hazard.

Re: FAKE £1 Coins, to accept or not accept!
Meant to add, looking forward to the new pound coin but the expense of replacing all of the mechanisms will far exceed the loses I have through fake coins!
Must be about .1 % of all sales etc
So not worth worrying about in my opinion.
However, the mechanisms are going to cost 5/10 £s plus the time now that is an issue and costly, then we have the lost sales during the transition, well that is going to be painful!
Putting two towers that take either is a recipe for disaster if you could afford it, and, will that amplify more knackered mechanisms through customers putting wrong coins in wrong machines?
There will be 'tears' I guess!
Personally, I would stay with the Status Quo

Must do my maths better!
That .1
should read:
0.001
that looks more like it!
Used a calculator!
