As I understand it tubz vending and Hurleys are offering an interim coin carrier to be fitted in March when the new £1 coin arrives which will take the old and new coins and another carrier to be fitted in October which will only take the new coin.

If both coins are about the same depth but the new coin is wider/larger diameter can anyone explain how the second coin carrier would stop the old coin going through also?

I haven't seen any mention of it in this thread but is everyone planning on changing the carriers twice?

you dont need to chamge the carrier again, when you fit new carrier and you turn the mech to first lever, you have to bend retention spring so it will take both coins, if its got too much tension on spring then old pound coin will not go through as lever catches on plate as if theres no coin there.
so come october just put plenty of tension on spring by bending it. will take new pound coin but will stop old one.

Thanks for the explanation. It was previously mentioned in the thread that both coins are almost exactly the same depth (3/3.15 mm) which is why only a coin carrier change is needed for mechs to accept both coins, from what I know of coin mechs the carrier controls the width/diameter of the coin and the spring/needle controls the thickness of the coin so if both coins are almost exactly the same thickness (depth) how will putting more tension on the needle stop the old coin? (If previous dimensions given are exact and the old coin is actually slightly thicker then if more tension on the spring affected anything wouldn't it actually stop the new coin going through?)

I am just speculating based on how I understand a coin mech to work so if someone has a new coin and a converted mech it would be great to know how it will work in practice.

My little drill arrived today so I thought Id have a go at doing a coin mech myself. Only took two hours!!!! I wont be doing any more like that. New coin carriers for me.

I Have changed approx 40 of my plates on my tower vendors mechs so far pretty easy to do takes aprox 3/4 mins a mech. Make sure you have the right tools for the job I am using the following: Table Vice, Electric screw driver, pair of Sir clip pliers, an electric multi tool for the filing, silicone grease.
So far I haven't had any problems with the new pound coin that I have tried in each mech.
I will say different mechs ie Chinese / new style Clenport and older style and clenport require slight adjustments.

simple, the new pound coin isnt round, it has 12 sides to it, i know it works because i have done over 25 mechs, filed them myself and played around with the rentention spring, applied tension and the old pound coin will not go through, in fact i have to decrease tension after i have filed to allow old £1 coin to go through.

drill? did you not see items i put up that are on ebay? takes me 15 mins a mech

Yep, got one of them drills. Still waiting for the bits to arrive. Hopefully that will make it easier. But I can change the plates in about 5 mins so thats the way forward for me as far as sweets are concerned. Gonna have a go at my toy mechs though.

Yep, got all the above, using Vaseline instead of silicone greese.
